A committee in Southwest Wisconsin has been formed to gain support for and eventually develop a hike, bike and ski nature trail connecting Wauzeka Wisconsin in Crawford County and Woodman Wisconsin in Grant County. The trail would parallel the railroad path that currently links the two villages presently. The land on which the trail is proposed is in the Lower Wisconsin River corridor and most is either leased or owned by the Wisconsin Department Natural Resources. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation owns a 100 plus right of way through the river way that is currently leased by the railroad.

The suggested hike, bike and ski trail would provide a unique benefit to Southwest Wisconsin and the tri-state area for the following reasons:

1. It would provide a desperately needed handicapped accessible viewing area of the center of the Lower Wisconsin River Valley that may only otherwise only be seen from a boat or canoe.

2. It would provide a natural invasive recreational experience that is lacking in Southwest Wisconsin. A place where hiking, biking and skiing become one with nature without disturbing habitat with the sounds, smells and disruption of gas powered vehicles.

3. It would provide a link in the ever growing sport of bicycling between Crawford County and it proposed bicycle routes and the proposed bike routes of Grant County.

4. I would help sustain and promote Wisconsin tourism by allowing visitors to view first hand our one of a kind natural resources face to face and not just through the window of a passing automobile.

5. Last but not least it would help restore the economic stability of several small communities faced with a declining population, loss of family farms, down sizing of local industry and lack of area work opportunities.

This trail would undoubtedly provide new business opportunities for entrepreneurs within 20 to 30 miles of the trail in any direction. It would become a destination of it’s own. Not a Wisconsin Dells or a Six Flags but more of a Wisconsin twist on an Alaskan adventure.
Visitors from other states and maybe even other countries would have an opportunity to spend a day in the wild in the Lower Wisconsin Riverway.

We need you help. We know the road may have curves, We expect challenges but will can see the end of the tunnel and there is a big light there shining in our direction.
